Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS)
From 1 October 2004, regulations came into force requiring all refrigerated display cabinets sold in Australia and New Zealand to be registered for Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS).
The MEPS figure is determined by the total energy consumption (TEC) in kWhr per day for the total display area (TDA) of a refrigerated display cabinet. The TEC and TDA are determined per AS1731, this data then generates the MEPS value (TEC/TDA). All companies importing and/or manufacturing refrigerated display cabinets are subject to these regulations and standards. The advantage to customers is that they are able to compare cabinet alternatives and calculate the long term energy differences.
The Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (http://www.eeca.govt.nz) administers the MEPS standards in New Zealand, and the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities in Australia.
